The Android App Starter Package

Lately I have been receiving more and more emails from PE Teachers, who are looking for PE related apps that they can install on their Android phones or Tablets. With that being said I have begun to dedicate more of my time towards making The entire PE Geek Apps range available to Android users. Along with our own development, there is an ever increasing amount of apps being made available (even exclusively) for the the Android platform. This influx echoes the fact that Android is truly the worlds largest mobile operating system, with a user base far greater than those on the iPhone and iPad.  With this in mind, along with my ever increasing interest in the space, I have prepared a starter package of Android Apps for PE Teachers.

Three Ring or Easy Portofolio

Either of these apps will make Student Portfolios a breeze in your classroom. With Three Ring you can easily capture photos, videos and audio recordings and assign them to students. This information is then uploaded to the Three Ring website and can be viewed behind

your secure account.

Another Alternative is the Easy Portfolio app which allows for the capture of Photo/Video/Audio/URL/Documents and Text notes for your student cohort. The data is then stored on the device, until you choose to export it via email or Dropbox.

Easy Assessment

The Easiest and most popular rubric style assessment app available. In a matter of a few minutes you can setup a rubric and assess your entire student cohort. Assessments can even include photo or videos to strengthen your evaluation. All assessment material can be exported to dropbox for archiving.

Easy Tag

Simple application that allows you to do statistical recording within sports. Users can very quickly setup a game panel with tiles dedicated to specific actions the user wishes to observe (see the image below). The user then taps the events as they observe them throughout the game play, ultimately completing a statistical analysis. The perfect tool for getting key performance indicators within games. Have injured students do recording during practical classes to provide insight into game play. Results can then be exported directly to email for further analysis.Keep track of student possessions and use this information to track involvement. A great little tool for a myriad of situations.

Cardiographunnamed

Cardiograph is a super high quality app that tracks your heart rate via your devices camera. The app uses the tiny colour changes that occur during capillary refill in your finger to determine your heart rate with astonishing level of accuracy. The best feature about this app is the capacity to create multiple profiles, making it perfect for a class full of students. In the past this has been used to track heart rate variance over a period of time and discuss how these changes occur. The other advantage to using this HR option is the less invasive nature when compared to a traditional chest strap

Coach’s Eye

The app is an absolute must have and brings exceptional insight to your Physical Education classes. Simply point and shoot your desired footage and tap to begin an instant on the spot analysis. Users can finely tune the footage the exact frame using the ‘fly wheel’ at the bottom. You can then use the drawing tools to complete a telestration emphasising the important aspects of the performance.  The really exciting addition to the app which takes it to the next level, is its ability to create a voice over recording during the video analysis. This recording can then be shared via Text Message, Email, YouTube or other social media platforms making it the easiest and most powerful way to improve performance.

Sports Tracker Pro

This is coolest GPS tracking app I have ever seen and comes only available for Android users. Use it to live track everything including Heart Rate, Breathing Rate and Skin Temperature with the Zephyr Bioharness attachment. AWESOME.

PE Games

PE Games has been designed to be the premier app for PE Teachers on the app store, containing over 100 games in a variety of categories. Once a user finds a game that they want to play they can add it to their lesson. Games can then be added and deleted as required, creating a quick snapshot of the games for your upcoming session. Other features of the app include the random tab, in which a user can ‘shake’ their device to receive a random game.

So what Android apps are you using? Suggest some additions to the starter package in the comments.

Fitness Tests App for Android

After a significant amount of feedback we have released the wildly popular “Fitness Tests” app for Android devices.

Fitness Tests is the quick, easy handbook guide for PE teachers, sports coaches, personal trainers or anyone looking to measure their
fitness.

The app allows for swift reference of over 30 fitness tests from aerobic capacity, through to flexibility. Upon selecting your test you will be provided with the aim, equipment, procedure and the norm standards so that you can easily and accurately complete the tests you desire.

Music Workout App for Android

The Music Workout app has been available for over a year for iPhone/iPod and in that time it has been a wildly popular app amongst PE Teachers and Fitness instructors across the world. With this in mind the largest request I have is to make it available for Android users.

So after a few weeks of development, Music Workout is now available for both Android smartphone and tablet users. Get it now at the Google Play Store

Music Workout is a unique interval timer that utilises your music to inform you when it’s time to rest and time to work. Perfect for teachers, coaches, trainers or anyone looking to improve their fitness. A great tool for facilitating group rotations and activities in PE Classes.

PE Games for Android

Im very happy to have finally developed my PE Games app for Android users. This is the first of many upcoming Android releases.

However the most exciting feature of the app is ability to add your own game categories and games. This means that over time you can turn the app into an enormous resource of games that you play in your classes.

Android Apps in PE

In recent months I have taken an interest in Android devices and as a result have purchased an Android phone strictly for development purposes and for testing apps. Considering that over 3.7 million Android devices were activated over the Xmas weekend, Android is clearly the mobile operating system with the greatest market share. With this in mind I thought I would share my top apps for Android.

SportsTracker Pro

This app has got to be the best tracking app I have ever come across. It not only allows the user to track their speed, distance, time, altitude etc via the GPS, but with additional hardware you can track your heart and breathing rates as well as your skin temperature. The best thing about this is the fact that a performer can be tracked live opening up a world of possibilities in the classroom.

Sports Rules

Developed with PE Teachers in mind this app contains the essential rules of 18 popular sports for swift reference. More sports will be added in time making this app the one stop shop for teachers prior to introducing a new sport.

Multi Reps

A great little app that guides you through a training program in pursuit of your ultimate goal. Users can pick either push-ups, situps, dips, squats, pull-ups or enter their own exercises. A great addition to circuit training and teaching students about concepts such as fixed load, individual load etc.

Endomondo Sports Tracker

Another sports tracking app that integrates well with social networks allowing you to challenge friends. Available in both free and pro versions.

Instant Heart Rate

From Azumio inc the makers of the best heart rate apps, comes this fantastic one which uses the devices camera to track heart rate. Works best in well lit areas or with devices that have a flash. Tracks the tiny colour changes that occur as a result of capillary refill.

Beep Test

Conduct the classic Multistage Fitness Test with your Android device. The app can keep track of multiple runners and also predict a V02 max on completion.

Sparticus Workout

The workout made famous by the movie 300 is now available as an app. A great app to assist with teaching around training and physiological responses to exercise (hypertrophy etc) See the demo here

Accupedo- Pro Pedometer

A superb pedometer app that employs a powerful algorithm to count the steps you take ignoring any movement that isn’t walking based. A great app to discuss the behavioural factors that effect physical activity. Teachers could use it to have students compare and contrast how your place of residence and workplace effect your activity throughout the day.

Workout Trainer

A really high quality workout app that guides your through workouts with audio and video cues. A great app to discuss how a training program should be developed and implemented.

Ease into 5K

The famous app that guides the hardiest couch potato to a complete 5km run. Users can then step up to the next level by completing the Ease into 10k app.

So there are some of the apps that I’m currently playing with and finding useful. However being a relative newbie to the world of Android apps, I would love to hear what others consider their best apps. Leave a comment below and I will be sure to include them in next blog post and the soon to be released “PE Apps” App – Android version.
