How To Use an Apple TV in the PE Classroom

So you just got an Apple TV Installed ? Follow the steps below & learn how to AirPlay & Mirror your iPhone or iPad

One of the best ways to maximise iPads in the PE Classroom is through the use of an Apple TV. Super affordable and easy to use, once connected you can extend the reach of the single device to a big screen making it possible to share with your entire class. This opens up a realm of opportunities big and small and I pointed these out in our most popular post ever “10 Ways You Can Use A Large Screen Display in PE

Here’s just a few ideas

  • Mirror (show the screen) your iPad’s screen onto a television, monitor, projector, and / or interactive whiteboard (IWB) and guide students through apps/websites and more
  • AirPlay  YouTube or Vimeo videos without having to use a seperate device.  These could be example and exemplar performance in the sports you’re teaching/learning.
  • Record and playback student videos to the group with ease
  • Use an app like ‘Yoga Studio‘ to have your group led by an expert
  • AirPlay music to your entire classroom
  • Provide an instant replay using Video Delay Instant Replay
  • Generate random teams and show the outcome on the big screen with ‘Classroom Teammates
  • Plus much much more

Here’s a quick guide to two of the most common features that make the above possible

AirPlay

At some point you’ve probably heard about AirPlay, a wireless streaming feature found on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch. With AirPlay, you can wirelessly stream videos, music, and photos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to Apple TV and stream music & videos to AirPlay speakers or receivers.

How to AirPlay content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Make sure that you’re close to your Apple TV.
  2. Open the app that you want to AirPlay from.
  3. Tap AirPlay icon or . In some apps, like Photos, tap , then tap AirPlay. You can also use Control Center to AirPlay just music just by switching the audio output.
  4. Select your AirPlay device. Don’t see your Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled device? Try connecting your iOS device to the same Wi-Fi network as the device you want to AirPlay to.

Mirror your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Here’s how to mirror your entire iOS screen on your Apple TV:

  1. Make sure that you’re close to your Apple TV.
  2. On your iOS device, swipe up from the bottom of your screen to open Control Center or swipe from top right down on the iPhone X.
  3. In Control Center, tap  Screen Mirroring, then select your Apple TV from the list. Don’t see your Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled device? Try connecting your iOS device to the same Wi-Fi network as the device you want to AirPlay to.
  4. If an AirPlay passcode appears on your TV screen, enter the passcode on your iOS device.

Your TV uses your iOS device’s screen orientation and aspect ratio. To fill your TV screen with the mirrored iOS device screen, change your TV’s aspect ratio or zoom settings.

Connecting Android devices

While technically not compatible, a number of very smart people have built some great android apps which can used to mirror your android screen and apps to an Apple TV.

AirServer Connect for Apple TV – the most advanced AirPlay mirroring sender for Android, allowing you to project your Android screen wirelessly, not just to one, but to multiple Apple TV’s and computers running AirServer at the same time
